Veterans To Be Honored in San Jose: Whether you walk, run or just hang out in the park, Saturday will be the day to honor veterans in San Jose. The city will host the Armed Forces Day Festival in the Park, which will include 5K and 10K charity races and a 1K walk that will raise funds for the Veterans Supportive Services Agency. The races will kick off at 8 a.m., and, following an awards ceremony, the festival portion of the event will begin at Lake Cunningham Park. The celebration will include a kids’ zone, live music, plenty of food and resource booths staffed by military veterans. The festival isn’t super close to transit options, but there will be parking available for just $6 a day at the Lake Cunningham site.

Saturday will make the third annual Bike to Shop Day, an event where shoppers are encouraged to cycle to various participating stores on the Peninsula. The Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose will be hosting cyclists and will offer free valet parking to all those who use their bikes to get to the site. The guilt of maxing out your credit card can be tempered by knowing that at least you got a good workout in beforehand.

MF16BA_Badge_255Make Your Mark at Maker’s Faire: The region’s favorite celebration of innovation, creativity and thinking outside the box is set to return to San Mateo. Nowhere else will you be able to see flying Star Wars drones, fire-belching sculptures, and a robot that writes street poetry than the Maker Faire, an annual event set to take place this Saturday and Sunday. The do-it-yourself gathering features mind-bending creations by tinkerers eager to explore new ideas, concepts and technologies. The event will start at 10 a.m. on both weekend days and will take place at the San Mateo County Event Center. The event center is just a short walk from the Hillsdale Caltrain Station, at the corner of El Camino Real and Hillsdale Boulevard, and SamTrans Route ECR provides direct service to the site as well, and SamTrans Route 292 serves stops at the west entrance to the center.
